Romans 10 Outline

Romans 10

1.   2 Timothy 2:15

A.      Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.

2.   When were Chapters and verses introduced into the Bible as we know them today?

A.      Chapters were introduced in the 13th century by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Stephen Langton,  Verses in the 16th century by a French printer by the name of Robert Estienne.

B.      This is important because much of what Chapter 10 tells us is brought into context from the ending of 9:30-33 as when it was originally written, it was one continuous document.

                  A.            Skandalon – Stumbling block/rock of offense – ensnare or entrap = intentionality

3.   Romans 10:1-4 -Pauls desire for Israel’s salvation

A.      Brethren, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation. For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge. For not knowing about God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

1.       Paul expresses his deep desire and prayer for the salvation of the Israelites. He explains how the Jewish people have an advantage over the Gentiles and how Paul loves them.

2.       He acknowledges their zeal for God but points out that it is misguided because it is not based on knowledge of God's righteousness. Faith is not a new principle from God but one that is evident in the Tanakh.(Torah-Law, Nebim-Prophets, Ktubim-Writings)

a.       Zelos – Zealous- hot enough to boil, eagerness
b.       Epignosis – knowledge – discernment, recognition
c.       Dikaiosyne – Righteousness – equity of character, moral purity
d.       Hypotasso – Submit – be under obedience

3.       The Israelites tried to establish their own righteousness through the law, failing to submit to God’s righteousness.

4.       Christ is the fulfillment of the law, bringing righteousness to everyone who believes. Romans 7:1-4 the law is only applicable while alive. When Christ died for us, he made it possible for our old selves to die to the law and therefore the law no longer applies to us.

a.       "Or do you not know, brethren (for I am speaking to those who know the law), that the law has jurisdiction over a person as long as he lives? For the married woman is bound by law to her husband while he is living; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law concerning the husband. So then, if while her husband is living she is joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress though she is joined to another man. Therefore, my brethren, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God."

4.   romans 10:5-13 the message of faith

                  A.            For Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on law shall live by that righteousness. But the righteousness based on faith speaks as follows: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down), or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).” But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; 13 for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

                  B.            Paul contrasts the righteousness based on the law with the righteousness based on faith.

                   C.            What is faith? Hebrews 11:1

                  D.            He concludes again that even though he’s expressing his love for the Jewish people separately, all have equal access to Gods grace and righteousness through faith.

                   E.            The righteousness by faith does not require extraordinary efforts (ascending to heaven or descending to the abyss) because Christ has already accomplished the work.

                   F.            10:6-7  Parallels Deuteronomy 9:4-6 reminding the Israelites that it is not their righteousness that dispelled their enemies but their own wickedness. Its not what you do that will save you, only your faith.

1.       “Do not say in your heart when the Lord your God has driven them out before you, “because of my righteousness the Lord has brought me in to possess this land” but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is dispossessing them before you. It is not for your righteousness or for your uprightness of your heart that you are going to possess their land, but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord your God is driving them out before you, in order to confirm the oath which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Know then it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stubborn people.”

                  G.            The message of faith is accessible and near, in our mouths and hearts.

                  H.            Salvation comes through confessing Jesus as Lord and believing in His resurrection.

1.       Kataischuno – Disappointed/Ashamed in the KJV – to disgrace

2.       Pistis – Faith –belief, faith, trust, confidence

3.       Sozo – Saved – to save, deliver or protect

4.       Pisteuo – Believe – to commit to ones trust

5.       Dikaioo – Justified – To render just or innocent

                    I.            This salvation is available to everyone, Jew and Gentile alike, who calls on the name of the Lord.

5.   romans 10:14-17 the necessity of preaching

A.    How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? 15 How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!” 16 However, they did not all heed the good news; for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.

B.    Paul emphasizes the importance of preaching the gospel for people to believe and be saved.

C.     He outlines a logical sequence: people need to hear the gospel to believe, and for that, preachers must be sent.

D.    Despite the availability of the message, not all accept it, as Isaiah prophesied. .52:7

E.     Faith comes from hearing the message of Christ.

F.     Psalm 22:37 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord and all the families of the nations will worship before You.

                  A.            Kerysso – Preaching –

                  B.            Horaios – Beautiful – seasonable, timely, belonging to the right hour or season

                   C.            Apostello – Sent – set apart , send out

                  D.            Eungelion – Good news – gospel

6.   Romans 10:18-21 Israel’s unbelief

A.      But I say, surely they have never heard, have they? Indeed they have;

Their voice has gone out into all the earth,
And their words to the ends of the world.”

19 But I say, surely Israel did not know, did they? First Moses says,

“I will make you jealous by that which is not a nation,
By a nation without understanding will I anger you.”

20 And Isaiah is very bold and says,

“I was found by those who did not seek Me,
became manifest to those who did not ask for Me.”

21 But as for Israel He says, “All the day long I have stretched out My hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.”

B.      Paul addresses the question of whether Israel heard the message, affirming that they did.

C.       He quotes Psalm 19:4 to show the message has gone out to all the earth.

D.      He references Moses and Isaiah to explain Israel’s unbelief and God’s plan to provide them to jealousy through the Gentiles.

                  A.            Acts 13:45, Acts 17:5, Acts 19:8-10

E.       Despite Israel’s disobedience, God continues to reach out to them.

                  A.            Matthew 23:37

                  B.            Syniemi – Understand- to put together

                   C.            Apeitheo – Disobedient – to refuse/withhold belief

                  D.            Antilego – Obstinate- to oppose ones self / decline to obey

7.   Conclusion

A.      You cannot be saved through works, only though Jesus Christ. Its not the belief in specific doctrines that saves you, its faith. You cannot transcend into heaven by your enlightenment, nor by delving so deep in scholarly knowledge. The gospel came first, before the letters, before the traditions, before the cannons, before the version of the Bible that you prefer, before the doctrines that strive to divide us. Do not allow non primary doctrinal issues that do not affect salvation to divide us.

B.      Most importantly, you must be adequately equipped to accurately handle the truth to be a workman for Christ.
